Cake decorating with Edible image

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

NOTE :  I DO NOT SELL EDIBLE IMAGE, thank you.

Even though applying edible image to cakes and cupcakes is common these days and taken for granted,  you might be surprised that not everybody knows about Edible Image.   A few of my students who are new in cake decorating are unsure on how to stick the edible image to cakes.. so today, I took some photos to show you how.   Edible image can be used on cakes with buttercream frosting, fondant and even royal icing.   Today’s order came for a little girl who loves Minnie Mouse.  I managed to find these ready Edible Image at one of KL’s bakery ingredient shop.  You could also order Edible image online, you need to forward the picture that you want, and the price ranges from RM14 to RM20 per A4 size.

This cost me RM8, total of 24 round edible images suitable for size M cupcakes.   Pretty cheap, actually.

First, apply the buttercream onto the cupcakes.  It doesn’t have to be super-smooth.   Make sure your hands are really dry.  Peel the edible image from the backing sheet, and just pressed it gently on the buttercream.  That’s it !   For fondant and royal icing, brush the back of the edible image with water, as little as possible.  Then pressed gently on the surface.  Next, decorate the cupcakes to make it look pretty and also to cover-up the edible image edges.  The borders below was done using a small Star tip.

And this are bigger cupcakes, so had to use a bigger design.  Petal tip. (Hope the customer likes it.  I am unsure myself whether this design is good or bad..).   Decorated cupcakes can be kept in the fridge to extend their shelf life.

Here are a summary of solutions if you encounter any problems when using Edible image (source : http://www.sugarcraft.com/catalog/edibles/edhelp.htm).

If humidity is high and you find that it is difficult to peel the edible image from the backing sheet, try :
  1. placing it in the freezer for 30 to 90 seconds (no longer), then gently roll the backing sheet (with image facing up).  The image should pop off from the backing sheet.
  2. air dry for 10-15 minutes, or as long as it takes. Test one corner to see if it is dried out enough.
  3. dry the edible image using a hair dryer on gentle setting. Hold the dryer out away from the picture.
  4. dry by using a small fan.
If the buttercream has formed a crust, spray with a fine mist of water before applying the image.
Do not add extra moisture to non-dairy whipped toppings.
Do not expose the edible image to sunlight for extended period as the colours will fade.
If the image “bubbles” after application, gently tap (do not rub) the image.

Good luck in your cake decorating..

Thank you Agnes and Sharmin. Liza, kak rasa letak edible image tu last minit. Sebab moisture/ bc tu oily semua akan menyebabkan problem tu. Jangan simpan lama sgt bila dah letak atas kek. Tkasih.
