Bread pudding

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

I think most of you already know how to make Bread Pudding.. this is the first recipe that I tried, when trying to bake years ago.  Anyway,  I’m making one today to finish up all the uneaten bread that we bought.  Here’s my version.

The ingredients

1 loaf of bread (normal one, not big)
butter, at room temperature

3 cups of full cream milk
3 large eggs
3/4 cup of brown sugar
2 teaspoon of vanilla extract

1 orange, for the zest
chocolate chips, coins or grated chocolate
Serve with sweetened Whip cream

Method

First, I like to trim off all the bread crust.   Then spread the bread with butter, on one side (or both).   Cut into triangles.   Rub some butter on the casserole dish.  Lay the first layer of the bread triangles.   Sprinkle with some choc chips and grated orange zest.   Repeat the layers with all the bread.

In another bowl, beat together the milk, eggs, brown sugar and vanilla.  Pour this onto the bread layers, press down the bread  so they soak up all the milk mixture.  Leave to rest in the fridge for an hour.   Remove from fridge, sprinkle the top with sugar, sliced almonds (or raisin) .  Bake at 180 C for 45 minutes and maybe 10 minutes more using only the top fire to brown the almonds.  It will fluffed up and once taken out from the oven, shrink back.

You could make a vanilla sauce,  but I only used whip cream which was sweetened with some icing sugar, to go with the bread pudding.   Simple and easy dessert.
