Basic sugarpaste & gumpaste class

May 24, 2008 By: Min Category: CAKES BY STUDENTS 6 Comments →

I will be pretty busy this weekend and don’t think I’ll be updating this blog until early next week. Before I go, I’d just like to show you the pictures of the cake done by one of my student, Ila. She’s quite new in using fondant but I’m so proud of her, look at her work :

Most of the students who came requested to make this type of cake, flowers with fabric effects…I try to teach them what they want to learn. We really had fun in the class. It’s quite funny sometimes to see them getting so excited during the making of the cake !

The base of the cake was done using the basketweave rolling pin, the one I used earlier to make my sunflower cake. The flowers were done using cutters. Swags and ribbons made from gumpaste mix with fondant. The red edging was created by using a cutter. We made the ‘broderie anglaise’ by poking some small holes with the end of a round piping tip and used a crimper with the love shape.

I’m very pleased with the results. Thanks Ila, you really have talent. It’s been great having you. :)

Sugarpaste & gumpaste class

May 18, 2008 By: Min Category: CAKES BY STUDENTS 15 Comments →

I’m so happy today, alhamdulillah we completed the first class for basic sugarpaste and gumpaste. The students were Aishah and Sue (check out their blogs for their lovely cupcakes and chocolates). We managed to decorate only one cake each. Much time was spent on showing them how to make marzipan, fondant and how to cover the cakes, and also making some gumpaste flowers. Here are some photos taken this afternoon.

Baking class for my friends

April 30, 2008 By: Min Category: CAKES BY STUDENTS 9 Comments →

Hi, thanks all for your nice wishes. Today I spent the whole day, from 10 am to 4 pm, teaching two of my friends some basic cake making and decorating. Well, they are my first students.. I have never given any class before but this friend of mine, Ahmootha, had always bugged me to teach her some basic baking. I’ve known Ahmootha since I was seven, can you believe it ? Meaning we’ve been friends for like 28 years ! Its like a reunion in a way.

We made chocolate cake and cupcakes, plus all the decorating. Being totally new and haven’t touch a piping tip/ nozzle before, I’m quite proud with their work. Here are some photos.

My dear childhood friend, Ahmootha, looking so serious icing her cake.

Not bad, right ? The two girls were so excited to bring back their cakes. And after this, they’ll be making cakes on their own for their kids’ birthday (or that’s what they promise). Thanks Ahmootha and Vichelle for visiting my kitchen.. and having to use my old oven !
