Face mould

June 18, 2008 By: Min Category: My gadgets 14 Comments →

It’s been quite a hectic few days, had class on Monday, then went off to follow hubby to Lumut. Got a chance to see my parents while hubby is at work in Hospital TLDM (he’s not a doctor, just an IT guy ). So I have not had the chance to do any real cake decorating work lately. I’ll just show you this face mould that I bought along with the clay extruder.

And back.

Honestly, sometimes I feel like I’m cheating when I use a mould. But then again, the result is beautiful. And making a face is not easy. So I think this is a good buy, cost about RM40.00. The outcome :

Once you colour the eyes and put some hair, it should look pretty. The mould has 4 sizes, so we can make adult and children faces.

I hope to find more moulds for my sugarcraft projects, but here in KL, the choices are really limited. And normally very expensive. I’m hoping one day I can make a trip to UK to stock up on all these gadgets. (when will that be ? )

Ok guys, have a good day.  :)

Clay extruder

June 12, 2008 By: Min Category: My gadgets 13 Comments →

My new gadget, the ultimate clay extruder ! Well, I use it for my sugarpaste, not clay. It is so easy to use.. just roll a piece of softened sugarpaste into the extruder, then screw it down. Out comes the shapes. The extruder has 20 disc, see the above link. I bought it from ICCA at PJ, RM150.00. Cost about US30.00 originally.

I use the long strands to make the nest for my baby dinosaur.. still in the making.

If you are serious into sugarcraft, I think you should get one of this clay extruder. It makes your job so much easier. You can make uniform looking hair, brick, rope and more. This is my first time trying it, and hopefully I’ll make a full use of it.

Till then, take care :)

Making realistic looking ribbon

May 17, 2008 By: Min Category: Cake decorating, My gadgets, Sugarpaste 4 Comments →

Making ribbon is quite easy and I guess most of us already know how to do it. I would like to suggest a great gadget to have, to emboss some dotted lines along the ribbon to make it look better. This is a cutter/ embosser, price is reasonable, around RM16.00.

All you do is just roll the wheel to get the needlework effect.

I don’t actually measure my strips when making ribbon. I just cut and adjust the length of the ribbon, based on the size of the cake.

For ribbon and drapes, it’s better to mix equal amount of fondant and gumpaste, to make it more pliable and have that beautiful curves. Put some cotton balls in the bow until it is dry and doesn’t droop. The above ribbon was done only using fondant (and in a rush..) so it looks a little bit stiff. I just wanted to show the embossed effect which makes the whole ribbon looks real.

It’s Saturday, beautiful morning, only thing it hasn’t rain for quite a long time here. Anyway, have a happy weekend, more time to explore your cake decorating ! Take care. :)

Crimpers

May 08, 2008 By: Min Category: My gadgets 3 Comments →

Just like to show you guys the crimpers that I bought yesterday.

crimper.JPG

This may be common to some, but I’m sure many of you out there don’t know what this is. Basically, these crimpers are use on a fondant cake. There are many designs as you can see from the tip of the crimper. This is one way to decorate your cake if you are too lazy to make fancy decorations or use royal icing and other stuff.

The cake must be crimped (macam cubit..) while the fondant is still soft. The black rubber is use to adjust the opening of the crimp. Here are some sample of designs I saw while surfing the net :

So, next time you are at the bakery supply shops, look out for this gadget. More reason to spend !
