Making leaf & cake decorating from buttercream
Yesterday I have shown you the steps in making roses from buttercream. Today, to complete the picture, I’m going to make the leaf and show more ideas on basic piping. The tip used for the leaf is this one.
The tip comes in a few sizes, the bigger the tip, the bigger the leaf will be. Use food colouring to colour the buttercream. I made my leaf green and add more yellow for a brighter green. Insert the tip in the piping bag and fill with buttercream and start decorating.. here’s how my cake look like :
As you finish piping the leaf, lift it up slightly to get the sharp edge of the leaf. Notice the garland work (yg macam langsir tu..) I use the same type of tip. I have some pictures taken on the process of making this cake. It’s a present for my neighbour who got married yesterday.
Start by preparing the crumb coat - this is actually just a thin layering of butter cream . The first layer of coating, or the base before we put the real buttercream icing on top of it. Keep in the fridge until the crumbcoat becomes hard. Once it’s hard, remove from fridge and start decorating.
It takes time, skill and patience to decorate a cake.. also not to mention the cost involved. To make the icing, we have to use more butter and icing sugar. Which is why cakes can be a bit pricey. But then again, we don’t order cakes everyday. I guess it’s worth it, a cake will surely brighten up the occasion.
